RWMS Heads to Richmond, This Time with Two Cars

(June 27, 2007) – After driver Mat Neely's solid run on Darlington Raceway's pavement, both he and RW Motorsports (RWMS) teammate, veteran Jerry Coons, Jr. are ready to head east to Richmond International Raceway to compete during the Indy Racing League's Sun Trust Indy Challenge this weekend, June 29 and 30. Finishing fifth at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C. during the NASCAR Nextel Cup weekend, Neely is heading into the event at RIR more confident in the C&R Racing, HG Associates Chevy-powered machine than he has been at any time since he took over driving duties of the #17 machine mid-way through the 2006 season. "We ran so well at Darlington, and our practice and qualifying speeds and times have been improving," said Neely. "I'm very confident that if we can stay out of trouble, we will have a solid run at Richmond—my goal is the podium." After an issue forced Coons to give up his second-place qualifying effort at Darlington to start at the tail of the field, he was able to forge an eleventh-place finish in the C&R Racing Stanton Mopar car. Veteran Mike Randol is serving as the crew chief on the #27 car, and he wants to get to Victory Lane just as bad as anyone. "It was a very frustrating day at Darlington—we qualified so well but had to start at the rear of the field," noted Coons. "I know that we have great equipment and I know that my Stanton Mopar puts out ample horsepower, we just need to transfer it to solid finishes." Scheduled to compete in the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds during Indy 500 weekend, both of the RWMS drivers were in the top-five during practice when rains washed out the remainder of the program, which will not be rescheduled. Both cars are prepared and crewed trackside by Scott Benic of Benic Enterprises, located in Fairmount, Indiana. Benic serves as the crew chief for the #17 car driven by Neely. Neely Has Busy Week, Six Races in Six Days

ROBINSON, Ill. (May 23, 2007) – Venturing out on his own for the 2007 United States Auto Club (USAC) National Sprint Car tour with support from the First Financial Bank of Terre Haute, Indiana, 2006 USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year Mat Neely is finding out what it means to be the owner and driver all over again. With support on the pavement from veteran Keith Kunz, Neely and crew chief Denny Knight are looking forward to the season ahead of them. In addition to his USAC Sprint Car schedule, Neely is focusing on the K&N Engineering USAC Silver Crown schedule, driving as a teammate to veteran Jerry Coons, Jr. for the well-known team of Rotondo-Weirich Motorsports (RWMS), based out of Lederach, Pennsylvania. Neely, driving the RWMS silver crown car, took home the famed USAC Four Crown Nationals trophy in 2006. On pavement, Neely competes in a C&R Racing chassis powered by HG Associates horsepower. On dirt, Neely hustles a Beast chassis again powered by HG Associates. "Last year at the Hoosier Hundred, we had a great run going until around lap eighty," said Neely. "We broke something in the suspension, and it caused our right rear tire to go flat, which was disappointing because we had a real shot to give the (Tony) Stewart cars a run for their money." The week of the Indianapolis 500 is always a busy week for open wheel racers around the Indianapolis area. Competing last night at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, Indiana in USAC Sprint Car competition Neely kicked off a busy six day stretch that will see him racing six times in two different divisions. After a tangle in the A-Main event at Twin Cities Tuesday night and a subsequent broken radius rod, Neely was officially scored in eighteenth place. Tonight, Neely is taking his USAC pavement sprint car to the famed Anderson Speedway for the Glen Niebel Classic 100; Tomorrow, the team is off to the non-sanctioned Jack Hewitt Classic at Kokomo Speedway; Friday will see the RW Motorsports team compete in the Hoosier Hundred silver crown race – a long-standing, traditional event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds; Saturday the Mat Neely Motorsports team will tow to the Lawrenceburg Speedway for the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) event; Sunday will see the MNM team make the tow to Haubstadt, Indiana for the MSCS sprint car event. "This week is always a busy one, and with us planning to attend some non-sanctioned events in addition to the USAC schedule, we aren't making life any easier on ourselves," commented Neely from North Vernon. "Even though we are going to be busy, it's one of my favorite weeks of the season!"

Coons and Neely Drive the RW Motorsports Team to the "USAC Silver Crown Showdown" at Darlington
LEDERACH, Penn. (May 8, 2007) – After a successful test earlier this season at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, RW Motorsports drivers Jerry Coons, Jr. and Mat Neely are looking to begin their ascent in the United States Auto Club (USAC) Silver Crown series points standings during the USAC Silver Crown Showdown at the Darlington Raceway this week. Solidly putting his car on the outside pole at Iowa Speedway, Neely's day was cut short by a broken throttle linkage during the main event. While he had fallen back, he was starting to work his way back toward the front of the pack when the #17 machine had to be limped back to the pit area. "We qualified well, and then a two dollar part broke and took us out of the race," said Neely. "It was by far nobody's fault, and obviously our HG Associates motor was strong, as we qualified on the outside pole at this fast, fast racetrack," finished Neely. Qualifying fifth, Coons took advantage of his Stanton Mopar power to put his #27 C&R Racing car as close to the pole position as it's been all season long. However, on lap 78, Coons was forced to bring his car pitside, as his motor began to let go. "It was a rough weekend for the RWMS team, and I know that we are all looking forward to going to Darlington," said Coons after the event at Newton, Iowa. Mat and I are both ready to start putting these cars in Victory Lane, as much for the team as us—Mike (Randol, Jerry's Crew Chief) and Scott (Benic, Mat's Crew Chief) and all of the guys have been working their tails off to make these go, so it's time to make it happen," continued Coons. The USAC Silver Crown Showdown at Darlington Raceway is scheduled to kick off with practice at 12:15, qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 8:00 pm. The NASCAR Busch Series practices at 3:30, 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Haubstadt, IN - May 6, 2007.
Mat Neely led the final two laps of the feature Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway to win the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series season opener. Neely drove the Neely Motorsports Twister sponsored by First Financial Bank, Maverick Energy, Street Heat, Lytle Electric, Ross Body Shop, and RLB Manufacturing. Neely, the 2006 MSCS Hardcharger of the Year, started in the 5th row for the feature and worked his way to the front.
He was already in third place when a caution flag slowed the field on lap 12 of the 25 lap event. Chad Boespflug and John Memmer were involved in an incident in turn one. As both cars rejoined the tail of the field Neely moved into the challenger spot formerly held by Boespflug. Neely had one car left to pass - leader Brady Short! Actually the race had three different leaders.
Chase Stockon started on the pole and pulled away in the lead. His run was cut short four laps later as a trail of oil followed the smoking sprint into the infield. It was Short’s turn to lead. Neely stayed close as the two slipped away from the pack. Progress between turns three and four eventually gave Neely an opportunity to dive under Short and complete a pass heading down the front straightaway. Two laps later Neely had his second MSCS career win. It was a banner night for the whole Neely team and a gang of supporters!

Coons, Neely Lead RW Motorsports to the New Iowa Speedway

LEDERACH, Penn. (May 2, 2007) – Returning to Iowa Speedway for the second time, the United States Auto Club (USAC) Casey's General Stores Triple Crown event this weekend, May 5, 2007 will see not only the #17 RW Motorsports car piloted by Mat Neely that ran the event in 2006, but also the #27 RWMS car driven by Jerry Coons, Jr. After suffering a gearbox issue at the Homestead-Miami Speedway and making an early exit from the race, Coons is ready to put his C&R Racing/Stanton Mopar machine in victory lane. Victory Lane is not a foreign place to Coons, as he was named the 2006 USAC National Midget Car Champion, driving for Wilke-Pak Motorsports. "We had some problems at Miami that were out of our hands. Now is the time to get past that, along with our not-so-great finish at Manzy, and start running up front, winning some races," stated Coons from his Tucson, Ariz. Home. Neely, who won the Silver Crown portion of the Mopar Thunder at the Four Crown Nationals en route to being named USAC Silver Crown Rookie of the Year in 2006. Neely, who is also running the full USAC National Sprint Car schedule, stepped in last year to the driver's seat halfway through the season. "I have some familiar tracks coming up in the schedule, either from racing on them or testing on them (Iowa and Darlington), and I'm excited to get this C&R Racing/HG and Associates Chevy car moving to the front of the pack. I'm getting more and more comfortable in the cars, and I'm able to give Scott (Benic) the feedback that he needs," said Neely from his Robinson, Ill. Home.
